Idukki: A five-year-old girl died in a car accident in Chetukuzhi near Idukki on Sunday morning. The deceased is Ami Elsa, daughter of Aby (32) and Amalu (28).
The accident happened after the van they travelled in collided with a KSRTC bus running from Cumbum to Kattappana. They were returning from a pilgrimage in Malayattoor. The accident occurred near Mar Ivanios Bethany School, where Ami was a student.
People in the area were woken up by a loud noise. When they rushed to the road, they saw Ami and her family trapped in the wrecked vehicle. Soon, fire and rescue services personnel and people in the area launched a rescue mission. A crane had to be brought to the site to separate the van from the bus.
The tragedy occurred when the family was just six kilometres from home. While Aby, Amalu and their two-year-old son Aidan are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kattappana, Aby's parents Thankachan (61) and Molly (60) have been shifted to a private hospital in Pala for specialist treatment.
