The organs of Alan Anuraj, a Malayali student declared brain dead following a New Year’s Day road accident in Bengaluru, have provided new life to eight people. The heart, kidneys, pancreas, lungs, liver, and corneas were among the organs donated and were transferred to various hospitals across Karnataka.

The Karnataka government’s posthumous organ donation programme, Jeevasarthakathe, efficiently coordinated the organ transfer procedures and identified suitable recipients.

Alan Anuraj (19), the son of Anuraj Thomas and Bini Anuraj, was a resident of Puthenvelikkara, Ernakulam. He was a first-year physiotherapy student at Saptagiri Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre, Bengaluru.

Alan sustained critical injuries in a bike accident on January 1 in Bengaluru and was admitted to hospital. Despite the efforts, doctors could not save him, and he was declared brain dead at Sparsh Hospital, Yeshwanthpur. Subsequently, Alan’s family gave their consent for the donation of his organs.

Health Minister Veena George expressed gratitude to Alan’s family for their selfless decision to donate his organs, which offered new life to eight individuals in another state.

She also extended her condolences to the grieving family. Alan is survived by his brothers, Amal and Alvin. His funeral will be held at 4 pm on January 5 at St George Church, Malavana, Puthenvelikkara.
