Pathanamthitta: Pulikeezhu police have arrested a youth for raping a nursing student and recording explicit visuals of her on his mobile phone, which was later sent to her father and brother.
The accused, Mithun Ramesh (21) of Kuttapuzha, Tiruvalla, was presented before the Pathanamthitta Judicial First Class Magistrate Court (JFMC) on Sunday and remanded to Pathanamthitta sub-jail.
Police sources stated that during their relationship, Mithun had recorded private images of the girl, a Mannar native, on his mobile phone. He later threatened to share them on social media and subsequently sent the images to the woman's father and brother via WhatsApp.
Police stated that it was evident Mithun intended to defame the girl and tarnish her reputation on social media. The investigation team, assisted by the District Police Cyber Cell, traced the location of Mithun’s phone and apprehended him at 9 pm on Saturday from the rented house of his aunt in Pullarimangalam, Mavelikkara.
After seizing his mobile phone and discovering explicit images, the police sent the device for forensic analysis. A case under sections of the IT Act and rape was registered following a statement from the girl's mother.
It was discovered that some of the explicit videos had been recorded in the bathroom of the girl's house. Police said Mithun took the girl to a hotel on Friday and raped her. Mithun's arrest was officially recorded on Sunday morning.
The girl's mother reported that the accused had repeatedly threatened her daughter while sending explicit images to her father and brother.
The investigation is being conducted under the supervision of Tiruvalla DYSP PS Ashad and led by Pulikeezhu Inspector Ajith Kumar. The accused was apprehended by a team headed by SI K Surendran, with the assistance of ASI Rajesh and Civil Police Officers Omaraya Naveen, Akhil, Alok, and Sudeep Kumar.
