Malappuram: A 19-year-old woman was found hanging at her residence in Kondotty, Malappuram, on Tuesday morning. The deceased, Shahana Mumthas, was a first-year degree student at a private college in the district. She married Abdul Wahid, a native of Morayur, on May 27, 2024.
According to Shahana’s family, she endured relentless mental harassment from Wahid, which they believe drove her to take the extreme step. They alleged that Wahid criticised her over her complexion and pressured her to dissolve the marriage. The family also claimed she faced ridicule for her limited proficiency in English.
Shahana showed signs of distress, which her teachers noticed and brought to the family’s attention, said sources. The couple had lived together for only 20 days after their marriage, as Wahid left for work abroad. His parents have also been implicated in the allegations.
The body was handed over to her family after a post-mortem at Manjeri Medical College Hospital. Kondotty police have registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation into the matter.
