Kozhikode: A woman was hacked to death by her son at Kattippara near Thamarassery in Kozhikode district on Saturday afternoon. The victim, Subaida Kayikkal (52), a resident of Adivaram, was recovering after surgery for a brain tumour.

Thamarassery police have taken Ashik (24) into custody. The incident occurred around 2.30 pm at her sister Shakeela’s residence, Adil Manzil, in Venakkavu, Kattippara, where Subaida and Ashik had been staying for the past few years.

Ashik reportedly borrowed a knife from a neighbour, claiming he needed it to crack coconuts, before committing the crime. According to ward member Anitha Ravindran, neighbours heard loud noises from the house.

However, the house was locked from the inside when they reached. ''Neighbours called the police, who instructed Ashik to open the door. He was found hacking his mother on the head from behind,'' Anitha told Onmanorama.

Shakeela was away at work when the crime took place, leaving only Subaida and Ashik at home. Both sisters had spent significant amounts of money on Ashik’s treatment at de-addiction centres.

Ashik, who had recently returned from Ernakulam at Subaida's request, was reportedly engaged in daily wage labour. Subaida’s body has been shifted to the mortuary at the Kozhikode Government Medical College Hospital. The motive behind the murder remains unclear. Further investigations are underway.
