Thiruvananthapuram: The General Education department on Wednesday suspended Jinil Jose J, principal of Vattiyoorkavu Government LP school, on charges of declaring a holiday for the school without the consent of the higher authorities. The matter came to light when the parents informed the authorities that the school was given a holiday as part of the strike taken out by a section of the Kerala government staff. A message was also circulated on the same.

The Assistant Educational Officer visited the school and found its gate closed. The official managed to open the gate, and when the parents sought the reason for the holiday, he replied that the school was not given a holiday.

Following this, the General Education Deputy Director issued an order suspending the principal, saying that his action caused disrepute to the department when the government was ensuring academic excellence and efficiency in government schools. The order noted that the principal's decision to declare a holiday for the school accounted for abuse of power and dereliction of duty.
