Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heatwave warning on Thursday in the northern districts of Kerala. 

According to the weather department, temperatures will likely rise 2-3 degrees Celsius above normal in isolated areas of north Kerala. Based on this warning, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) advised people to stay alert.

The state Health Department also issued an advisory on severe heat conditions, which said that people should avoid direct sunlight between 11 am and 3 pm. Employers have been directed to reschedule the working hours accordingly. Special care has to be taken for small children, elderly people, pregnant women, and patients suffering from serious illnesses, according to the Health Department.

The heat could lead to conditions such as sunstroke, sunburn, and dehydration. The authorities recommend that people drink plenty of water even if they don’t feel thirsty. Treatment must be sought when body temperature increases, heart rate increases, dry skin with a reddish colour is noticed, severe headache, occurs, vomiting occurs, dizziness occurs, or physical fatigue occurs.

Meanwhile, IMD forecast thundershowers on Friday in southern and central districts. Following this, the authorities announced a yellow alert in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Pathanamthitta.
