Thrissur: The Forest Department has transported the injured wild elephant to Abhayaranyam, a wildlife rehabilitation centre in Kodanad, where treatment has begun. The tusker was moved in an animal ambulance equipped with a sturdy enclosure to ensure its safety during transit.
Speaking to the media, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) R Lakshmi confirmed that the elephant’s condition is stable. "There is no cause for concern regarding the jumbo's health. However, it is exhausted. Since the wound is quite deep, regular medical care is necessary, which is why we brought the elephant here," she said.
Addressing concerns about the elephant's fall, Lakshmi explained that while there was initial apprehension, the deep sedation helped the process. "Tusker Ganeshan only attempted to assist the injured elephant in standing. However, in doing so, he inadvertently pushed it," she added.
Speaking to Manorama News, Forest Department Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Arun Zachariah said the team has started treatment and will monitor the elephant’s response to the medication. "The wound is deep and critical. We need to assess how the tusker responds to the treatment before deciding on the next course of action. The elephant is extremely fatigued due to the tranquillization. We have sent blood samples for testing and are awaiting the results," he said.
Dr Zachariah and his team had earlier cleaned the wound and provided first aid while the elephant was still unconscious in Athirappilly.
Forest department veterinarians have been monitoring the elephant for the past three days. Officials observed that while the animal continued to eat, drink, and follow its routine, it showed signs of fatigue. It was found with an infected, maggot-infested wound requiring urgent medical attention.
