Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday visited former CM VS Achuthanandan at the SUT Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram, where he has been in critical care for the past month. The CM was accompanied by CPM State Secretary MV Govindan.

Achuthanandan passed away on Monday.

Although there has been no official communication about his health condition, ministers and other senior leaders have visited the hospital in Pattom.

Reports suggest that Achuthanandan’s blood pressure has dropped and his condition is critical. However, there has been no official confirmation from the hospital so far.

Achuthanandan, a towering figure in Kerala politics, has been battling age-related health issues in recent years and has largely stayed away from public life.

He is the last surviving member of the group that founded the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1964, following the historic split in the undivided Communist Party.

A lifelong campaigner for social justice and workers’ rights, Achuthanandan served as the state’s chief minister from 2006 to 2011.
