Kambankanam viewpoint: A scenic delight shadowed by dangerous falls

Thodupuzha: The Kambankanam Chathanpara viewpoint, located along the Kanjar–Pullikkanam–Vagamon route, is known for its breathtaking panoramic view, but it conceals a deadly danger. The site, which features a deep gorge and lacks basic safety measures, has already witnessed more than ten accidents, in which four people lost their lives.
The site remains alarmingly under-equipped in terms of safety infrastructure. The only barrier in place is a fragile parapet wall, barely two feet high. Tourists frequently climb onto this narrow structure to get a clearer view of distant landmarks such as the Moolamattom region and the Malankara Dam. However, a single misstep or strong gust of wind could send someone plunging down the steep, rocky cliffs that stretch for several kilometres below.
Slippery roads during the monsoon season further heighten the risk. The absence of street lighting, safety boards, and proper warning signs continues to make the area a hazard zone.
Numerous accidents have occurred at the spot recently, with several tourists falling into the gorge. The latest tragedy occurred on Friday, when Tobias Chacko (58), a native of Thoppumpady in Ernakulam, fell to his death. On New Year's Day, Ebin Mathew from Karinkunnam also lost his life at the same spot during a celebration. A few months earlier, a tipper truck driver had met a similar fate, marking the location as a recurring accident zone.
However, in many instances, fire and rescue personnel managed to save the victims. Just months ago, a mini-bus carrying 22 Sabarimala pilgrims veered off and plunged nearly 500 meters into a ravine near the same location.
Locals are now urging authorities to immediately install protective railings and prominent caution signs to prevent further tragedies.
