Locals threaten protest as Saradhy bridge in Alappuzha lies in ruins

Kattoor: Cracked approach roads, waterlogged paths and a crumbling bridge without handrails - this is the condition of the Saradhy Bridge in Ward 19 of the Mararikkulam panchayat. Despite repeated appeals from residents, authorities have failed to act, putting hundreds of daily commuters, including school children, at risk.
The bridge, just wide enough for a two-wheeler, lost its side railings months ago. With the onset of monsoon, the roads on either side have turned into muddy pools, worsening the situation. The main road leading to the bridge has also deteriorated into a swampy mess.
For residents on the western side of Saradhy Junction, the bridge is a vital connection to the Coastal Highway. But with the bridge nearly unusable, locals are now forced to walk nearly a kilometre through Kattoor Church Junction to reach the highway.
While the panchayat has repeatedly assured that the bridge would be rebuilt, no action has followed. Frustrated, locals are now planning a protest to demand urgent repairs.
“The Saradhy Bridge is a glaring example of the neglect our area has suffered for decades,” said Bosco Joshui Thekkepallakkal, Mandalam Secretary of the Congress party. “The bridge, built without foresight, doesn’t even have the width to safely accommodate a two-wheeler. A permanent solution must be found immediately.”
