Durg: Opposition MPs on Tuesday visited the two Keralite nuns who were arrested in Chhattisgarh on charges of religious conversion and human trafficking.
The delegation of MPs, including N K Premachandran, Francis George and Benny Behanan, visited the nuns in Durg jail. Meanwhile, a lower court in Chhattisgarh rejected the bail plea of the two nuns, and the church has decided to approach the sessions court on Wednesday, IANS reported.
The MPs alleged that the nuns faced poor treatment at the railway station. The nuns told the delegation that the three girls had their Aadhar cards and other identity cards with them. They added that the girls were travelling with their parents' permission and were over 18 years of age.
Premachandran alleged that the Bajrang Dal workers checked the bags of the girls. Benny Behanan said that it was suspicious that the nuns had not received bail even after three days of arrest.
Meanwhile, dramatic scenes unfolded outside the Durg jail when the CPIM delegation was denied permission to meet the nuns, citing that the visiting hours had passed. The leaders were asked to visit the jail at 10 am on Wednesday. The delegation, including MPs Jose K Mani, A A Rahim and senior CPIM leader Brinda Karat, alleged that it was a deliberate attempt to prevent them from meeting the nuns and expressing solidarity with them.
Speaking to the media, Brinda Karat said that they will visit the jail on Wednesday and will not leave Chhattisgarh until they meet the nuns.
