Three migrant labourers died, reportedly of asphyxiation, while cleaning a water filtration tank at a waste treatment plant at Areekode in Malappuram on Wednesday. Fire officials said they did not get an emergency alert. Areekode police said they got a call about migrant labourers being trapped in a tank and were rushed to the Government Medical College, Manjeri. The labourers, Hithesh, Vikas and Saidali, were natives of Assam and Bihar.

Around 15 workers were employed at the plant. They received an information around 12.30 pm that some of the employees who entered the tank had not returned. When other workers went to look for them, they were found trapped inside the tank.

They were admitted to the intensive care unit. According to reports, one labourer complained of uneasiness while cleaning the tank and others got trapped while trying to rescue them.
