Protests grow as renovation of Idukki's Ezhukumvayal–Valiyathovala road stalls

Nedumkandam: Ask anyone who travels the Ezhukumvayal–Valiyathovala Road these days and they’ll tell you the same thing; that the old road was far better. Despite the long-standing demand from locals and a budget allocation of ₹5 crore for its restoration, the project has run into a string of delays and disappointments.
Though work finally began after much waiting, the relief was short-lived. The onset of rain brought construction to a halt within days. Now, a section of the road lies dug up by an earth mover, making passage even more treacherous than before.
What was once a passable route is now a stretch of misery. Portions filled with quarry waste have become waterlogged, and the entire tar surface from Valiyathovala has been ripped away. Sharp curves on the route have turned into danger zones, especially for two-wheeler riders, who frequently fall victim to skids and slips.
The narrow width of the road, barely enough for two vehicles to pass simultaneously, only adds to the hazard. For many, crossing this stretch safely has become an act of faith as they brave the mud, hoping not to end up stuck or worse.
