Safety signs missing on Thiruvalla–Kayamkulam stretch, residents demand action

The Thiruvalla–Kayamkulam Road, a state highway built to modern standards, boasts a well-laid surface that reflects quality construction. However, the same level of care is sorely lacking when it comes to road signage along this busy stretch. Take the Mulleli bridge, for example. Located just after Ambili Junction, this narrow bridge cannot accommodate two vehicles at once. Yet, there are no proper warning signs to alert motorists about its limited width or caution them against overtaking.
Providing clear and visible warnings to drivers is a basic traffic safety requirement. But the current state of signage on the road suggests that the Public Works Department (PWD) is not taking this responsibility seriously. Despite spending crores on building the road, the PWD has shown little urgency in replacing broken or damaged signs. A board warning against overtaking was recently knocked down by a vehicle, and days have passed without it being reinstated. Instead, it hangs loosely on a nearby pole, barely visible to oncoming traffic.
Residents are now raising serious concerns: “Why are crucial safety signboards being treated as an afterthought? And if an accident occurs due to the lack of proper signage, will the PWD accept responsibility?”
