Idukki: Chinnakanal continues to face wild elephant attacks, with the rogue tusker named Chakkakomban causing fresh destruction early Wednesday. A house belonging to a woman named Mariyakutty in the Singkanthan area was destroyed around 3 am.

Mariyakutty was away in Kottayam for medical treatment at the time. Her neighbour, Rajarathnam, who was watching over the house, managed to escape as the elephant approached. The tusker then demolished the structure and destroyed household appliances and belongings.

The elephant has reportedly been active in the region for days, damaging several homes and farmland across the 301 High Range and nearby areas. Although a Rapid Response Team has been deployed, residents claim their efforts have not been effective.

Residents also said they have not received any compensation from the government as their properties lie on unregistered land. Panchayat president N M Sreekumar has urged authorities to take necessary action and provide compensation to affected families.
