Kochi: Actor Shwetha Menon has alleged that the criminal case filed against her was an attempt to sabotage her chances of becoming the first woman president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA).

In a petition at the Kerala High Court, Shwetha Menon pointed out that the complaint against her was filed on July 31, the last day for withdrawal of nominations for the AMMA elections scheduled on August 15. The FIR was registered on August 5.

Shweta submitted her nomination on July 24. With actor Jagadeesh withdrawing from the race, she and actor Devan are the only contenders. Her petition notes that a growing consensus within the Association favoured a woman president this time, placing her as a strong frontrunner.

She termed the allegations, relating to obscene content and alleged involvement in a sex and drug racket, as baseless and ill-timed, claiming they were made with the “ulterior motive” of harming her reputation and prospects in the upcoming election.
