Kerala to roll out disaster management plans for tribal settlements: CM

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Saturday announced that the state will implement disaster management plans tailored to each tribal settlement to better address natural calamities in vulnerable areas. Speaking at the golden jubilee celebration of the Scheduled Tribes Development Department, Vijayan said the State Disaster Management Authority has prepared reports after studying two tribal colonies.
“Natural calamities used to create issues in tribal hamlets. Steps will be taken to implement settlement-specific disaster management plans in all ‘unnathies’,” he said.
The CM said the core objective of government programmes for marginalised communities is empowerment, but warned of threats posed by irresponsible use of artificial intelligence. Some AI-generated content, he noted, could spread misinformation about indigenous people and be misused to threaten their land and resources.
Scheduled Tribes make up 1.45% of Kerala’s population, with 2.83% of the state’s annual budget allocated for them. Vijayan alleged that the Centre’s allocation — 3.08% of its budget for communities that form 8.6% of India’s population — was inadequate.
Compared to other states, he said, backward communities in Kerala can live with dignity without facing caste-based discrimination.
