Kannur: Thalassery Police have registered a case against Kodi Suni (Sunil Kumar), Muhammed Shafi, Shinoj, and their acquaintances for public consumption of alcohol in violation of the Kerala Abkari Act. The three are convicted in the sensational TP Chandrasekharan murder case and are currently serving sentences in Kannur Central Jail.
The case, registered under Sections 15(c) and 63 of the Kerala Abkari Act, follows CCTV evidence showing the trio drinking in a public place. According to the FIR, on June 17, 2025, the trio was brought from jail to the Thalassery ADC 3 Court for trial a case.
After court proceedings, at around 4 pm, the convicts allegedly slipped away from police supervision and went to Victoria Hotel near the court. CCTV footage purportedly shows them drinking alcohol in the hotel’s public car parking area along with friends.
The FIR states that the footage “clearly shows” the incident, and the decision to register the case was made after reviewing an enquiry report and documents forwarded by the Assistant Superintendent of Police, Thalassery. SI P Shameel of Thalassery Police Station registered case on August 8, 2025, and submitted a copy of the enquiry report and CCTV footage as evidence.
The incident had earlier sparked controversy, leading to the suspension of three police officers. Initially, police claimed the CCTV did not conclusively prove alcohol consumption and that a case might not hold in court. The current registration marks a reversal of that stand, with police acting suo motu after confirming the incident.
