Kothamangalam police on Monday arrested Rameez Mohammad (24) in connection with the suicide of a 23-year-old woman, who was found hanging in her bedroom on Saturday. The police have slapped charges against him for abetment to suicide ( section 108), sexual assault on the promise of marriage (69), assault (130), and wrongful confinement(127) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police said Rameez’s parents are also likely to be named as accused in the case. Rameez was produced before the Magistrate Court, and remand proceedings are in progress, police added.

According to the FIR, she was rushed to a hospital in Kothamangalam, where she was declared dead at 2.43 pm. A suicide note, kept on the bed, was recovered from the room. She raised allegations of harassment and forced religious conversion against Rameez. In the note ending with an apology to her mother and brother, she wrote she was “going to be with my pappa.” Police are probing the events leading to her death, including claims she was pressured into marriage and religious conversion.

The funeral was held on Sunday after the autopsy at the Government Medical College, Kalamassery.
