Malappuram: A fire that gutted a house in Tirur last week, initially thought to have been caused by a charging power bank, was in fact triggered by the explosion of illegally stored firecrackers, police said on Monday.

Following the revelation, police arrested the house owner, Abubacker Siddeeq (34) of Thekkankuttur. The incident occurred around 10.30 pm on August 5, destroying the residence of Siddeeq, an autorickshaw driver.

Neighbours, alerted by a loud explosion, rushed to the spot and used water from nearby wells to douse the flames. By the time firefighters from the Tirur station arrived, the blaze had been brought under control.

Household items, children’s books, documents, and clothes were reduced to ashes. Siddeeq was produced in court and remanded in custody. Police said a detailed probe is underway.
