The Kerala High Court has sought a status report from the Principal District and Sessions Court, Ernakulam, which has been hearing the trial in the actress assault case since 2018.

The direction came after a petition by journalist M R Ajayan, alleging delays in concluding the proceedings.

Malayalam actor Dileep is among the six accused, charged with conspiring in the February 2017 abduction and sexual assault of a fellow female actor inside a moving vehicle on the outskirts of Kochi. He was arrested in July 2017 and spent 88 days in custody before being granted bail by the High Court.

In November 2019, while rejecting Dileep’s plea for a copy of the memory card said to contain visuals of the crime, the Supreme Court directed that the trial be completed “preferably within six months,” by January 31, 2023. The court later extended the deadline to March 31, 2024, while reiterating that the proceedings should be concluded at the earliest.
