The Kerala High Court on Wednesday said that it would give the Central Government one last opportunity to respond to the issue of loan waivers for victims of the Wayanad landslides.

A Division Bench comprising Dr Justice A K Jayasankaran Nambiar and Justice Jobin Sebastian made the statement while hearing a suo motu case taken up by the Court following the devastating landslide that struck Wayanad on July 30, 2024.

In response to the court's query on the loan waiver for landslide victims, the Additional Solicitor General of India (ASGI) replied that a final decision had not yet been communicated to him, but assured the Court that he would provide an update by September 10.

He also said that the Ministry of Home Affairs had referred the matter to the Ministry of Expenditure, and from there, it was forwarded to the Ministry of Finance, where the concerned division is currently looking into it.

However, the court said that it would be the last chance for the central government to respond. "Post these matters on 10th September. This is the last chance for the Central government to revert to this Court regarding their decision on loan waiver," the court said.
