Ernakulam: A woman from Kottuvally in Ernakulam died by suicide on Tuesday due to financial problems. Asha Benny (42) jumped into a river near her house, police said. They have also recovered from her residence.
Asha had borrowed a large sum from a moneylender, Bindu Pradeep, a resident of the same locality and the wife of a retired police officer. Bindu had reportedly threatened Asha to repay the money.
Asha had earlier lodged a complaint with the Aluva SP against the couple, alleging that they had threatened her over financial transactions. Following this, the North Paravoor Police summoned both parties and advised them to resolve the matter amicably and not create further issues, a police officer said.
However, later that night, Bindu reportedly visited Asha's house and threatened her again. Asha's family told Manorama News that this deeply distressed her and drove her to take her own life.
Police said an investigation has been launched into the incident. The body has been shifted to the Government Hospital, Paravoor, following inquest proceedings.
