Thodupuzha: Excise officials arrested two men in Thodupuzha town on Tuesday night after seizing 1.3 kilograms of ganja from them. The accused are Onattuputhanpura Shiyas (41), alias Kala Shiyas, a native of Pattanikunnu in Thodupuzha, and Mahtab Ali Mundal (50), a resident of Murshidabad, West Bengal.

The duo was nabbed during a vehicle inspection at Vengalloor while transporting the ganja on a two-wheeler for sale. According to officials, they were part of a racket that purchased ganja at low rates from Kolkata and Murshidabad and sold it at higher prices in Kerala. Shiyas has also been booked in several other criminal cases.

Excise Circle Inspector TK Rajesh said more people are involved in the racket. He added that all accused will be arrested soon. The operation was led by Excise Inspector (Grade) Lijo Umman, Assistant Excise Inspectors (Grade) OH Mansoor and KK Majeed, along with Preventive Officers VS Aneesh Kumar and Joju T Paul.

The accused were produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.
