Idukki: Ahead of the Onam rush, the Food Safety Department has intensified inspections across the district to prevent the sale of adulterated food products.

Three squads have been deployed for the drive, each led by a food safety officer and supported by a team of up to three members. The inspections are being carried out in Thodupuzha, Peerumedu, Devikulam, Udumbanchola, and Idukki taluks. The operation, which began earlier this month, will continue until Uthradam day.

The focus is on establishments involved in the production, storage, and sale of food items, with special attention to hotels, restaurants, bakeries, and other eateries to ensure proper hygiene. 

Food samples collected from unauthorised establishments are being sent to the Kakkanad laboratory for testing. Based on the results, legal action will be initiated through the courts. So far, 113 cases have been registered across the district. During a recent Adalat held in Udumbanchola and Idukki, authorities imposed a total fine of ₹1.3 lakh for various violations.
