Pathanamthitta: A fire broke out at the gas crematorium in Ranni’s Pazhavangadi Jandayikkal on Monday during the cremation of a 95-year-old woman. The incident occurred around 2.30 pm when her grandson, Jijo Puthenpuraykkal, a native of Puthumon, lit the chamber with burning camphor, which accidentally spread to his hand.
“The youth sustained only minor injuries to his feet and escaped without major harm,” said Ruby Koshy, president of the Pazhavangadi panchayat, who visited the family.
No other injuries were reported, and the exact cause of the fire remains unclear. Any lapse on the part of the trained staff at the crematorium will be dealt with necessary action, Ruby added. Jijo was wearing only a wet towel during the ceremony, which prevented more severe burns. Ranni police have launched an investigation into the incident, reported Manorama News.
