Thiruvananthapuram: A 60-year-old man from Venjarammoodu in Thiruvananthapuram district has been diagnosed with amoebic meningoencephalitis. The patient, a carpenter residing in Ward 11 of Pullampara panchayat, was admitted to Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, on August 11 with a severe headache.

Subsequent tests at the hospital confirmed the presence of the brain-eating amoeba on his body. Hospital authorities said his condition is currently stable.

This is the second reported case of amoebic meningoencephalitis in Pullampara panchayat. In 2023, the disease was detected in a child from the same area. Panchayat officials said preventive measures will be implemented across the locality from Wednesday.

Earlier this month, Kozhikode Medical College Hospital reported three cases.
