Kalpetta: Gold ornaments weighing 3.5 sovereigns were stolen in broad daylight from a jewellery shop in the heart of town here on Tuesday.

The theft was reported from Fashion Jewellers at Chungam Junction. According to shop owner K Assainar of Koduvally, the crime was carried out by two men who entered the store under the pretext of buying a copper pendant.

After purchasing the pendant, the men pointed out that the currency notes handed back as balance were old and asked for them to be replaced.  While a conversation was on in this regard, hey even slipped their hands inside the open cash drawer.

At the time, only one staff member was present in the shop. Growing suspicious of the duo’s behaviour, the employee later checked and found a box containing gold ornaments missing. CCTV footage capturing the theft has since surfaced in the public domain.

Based on a complaint lodged by Assainar, police have registered a case and launched an investigation.
