Stamp collection replaces flowers in this Kottayam priest’s Onam pookkalam

A Catholic priest here has given a creative twist to tradition this Onam, crafting a pookkalam (floral carpet) not with flowers, but with stamps.
Fr Wilson Puthussery, Vice Principal of AKJM Higher Secondary School, Kanjirappally, has designed this one-of-a-kind pookkalam by carefully arranging stamps instead of the traditional blooms. A lifelong member of the Philately Association, Fr Puthussery used over 1,000 different stamps from around 50 countries to create the 10-layered pookkalam.
Special care was taken to ensure that no stamp was repeated. The stamps feature images of flowers ranging from roses, lotuses, and lilies to kanikkonna (golden shower) and floral species native to various foreign countries. Some of the stamps used date back to the 1950s.
Over 100 students from the school are part of its active Philately Club, which is led by Fr Puthussery. The ‘stamp flower bed’ will be put on display when students return to school after the Onam vacation. During the previous Christmas, Fr Puthussery had also created a Christmas tree using his stamp collection.
