Elappully: A new project is being planned to protect and support the people of Ramassery, who sustain their livelihood by preparing the famed Ramassery Idli. The initiative will be finalised by forming a collective under the leadership of the Ramassery Gandhi Ashram.

A preliminary meeting to discuss the plan was held at Pavodi in Ramassery village, a place that still holds memories of the historic Bhoodan movement. The meeting was inaugurated by P Bhavaneswari, recipient of the Manorama Karshakasree Award.

Ramassery Idli, a heritage product of Palakkad district, enjoys international recognition. Food enthusiasts and travellers from over 100 countries are estimated to have visited Ramassery to taste this unique dish, which carries a 150-year-old tradition and a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

Despite this legacy, only nine families continue to earn their livelihood through Ramassery Idli making, and they now fear how long they can sustain this profession. Even with its heritage and GI status, the product has not been able to secure better markets through government channels. It is for this reason that the new project aims to safeguard the families who carry forward this treasured culinary tradition.
