Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Police Complaints Authority has disposed of 5,152 of the 5,218 complaints it received against police officers since its formation in 2012. The highest number of complaints, 808, was filed in 2017, while the lowest, 94, came in 2024. This year, 45 complaints have been received so far, of which 14 are pending.

Complaints against officers up to the rank of deputy superintendent of police are handled by the district-level authorities, while those against senior officers are examined by the state authority. Cases of grave misconduct, including custodial deaths and physical assault, are also taken up at the state level.

Justice V K Mohanan, chairman of the authority, said no pattern of widespread police crime has been found over the years. “The authority has powers only to make recommendations based on the complaints it receives,” he said.

“There has been no significant increase in the number of complaints. All complaints with legal validity have been resolved,” he added.
