Kuttoor: The Irrigation Department has begun efforts to clear the soil deposits and trees obstructing the smooth flow of water in the Manimala River.

For years, the bend beneath the Thondara bridge has been blocked by mud deposits and trees, raising concerns among local residents. Repeated complaints about the obstruction and the resulting flood risk have now prompted the department to take action. A contract to remove the mud locks was awarded through auction in March.

The auction for felling and clearing the trees will be conducted tomorrow at the panchayat community hall.

The mud banks, formed from accumulated sediment and sludge, have remained in the middle of the river for several years. They currently hold 13 large and small trees, all belonging to the Aattuvanchi category.

Officials stated that the mud deposits will be removed once the trees are cleared. Around 17,000 cubic metres of sand and sludge are expected to be removed from the site.
