Kodungalloor: The construction of the much-awaited Azheekode – Munambam bridge that connects Ernakulam and Thrissur districts will resume soon. ET Tyson MLA said that the construction would be swiftly completed following a favourable verdict in a case related to land acquisition.
The construction that was progressing at snail’s pace at Munambam area is likely to gather pace now. The land at Munambam couldn’t be acquired for the bridge as it was embroiled in a legal case related to a private building that stood here. So, the construction of the main pillar in Munambam couldn’t be started. Now, with a favourable verdict, the construction of the bridge would be resumed in Munambam area too.
Meanwhile, ET Tyson MLA visited the site to oversee the construction works. The bridge is 90 percent completed in Azheekode area. Foundation works are progressing in the area close to the lake while other works are also being swiftly done.
Among the 200 piles on both land and water, 196 have been completed. Four more piles are to be completed in the Munambam area. Meanwhile, the construction of the spans as well as the works close to the Munambam land area too are progressing. It was on November 13, 2023 that the construction of the Azheekode – Munambam bridge had begun. Currently, the 52.6 metres long spans are being attached with the help of advanced machinery.
The spans that are built at a different location are attached to the pillars in the lake using modern machinery and technology. Cheriyan Varkey construction company has been entrusted to build the bridge that is funded under the KIFB project.
The bridge is 1123 metres long and 15.70 metres wide including the approach road. Meanwhile, the authorities hope to complete the construction and open the bridge by next year. Around 106 cents of land including 53 cents in Munambam area as well as the land owned by the fisheries department in Azheekkal were acquired for building this bridge.
