Malappuram: A 29-year-old Assistant Prison Officer of Tavanur central jail was found hanging at his rented quarters near the jail on Friday morning. The deceased is identified as S Barshath, a native of Chittur in Palakkad. 

Barshath had joined duty at Tavanur about seven months ago. After completing his shift on Thursday afternoon, he returned to his quarters. Later that night, he sent a WhatsApp message to his brother saying he wanted to end his life. The brother saw the message early Friday, following which he alerted prison officials. By the time the officers reached the quarters, he was dead. 

Barshath is survived by his parents, Shahul Hameed and Fasiya, and siblings Firos, Fausiya and Drishya.
