Varavoor panchayat in Thrissur wins Haritha Kerala Mission’s 'Pachathuruth' award

Varavoor: Varavoor panchayat grabbed the first position in the district-level Pachathuruth award by the Haritha Keralam Mission. Kozhikottukulam model green islet in Varavoor panchayat in Thrissur district won the top spot in the Navakeralam Karma Padhathi – 2 initiated by the Haritha Keralam Mission.
Meanwhile, Kulavetti green islet in Elavalli panchayat and Nidralayam islet in Madakathara panchayat won the second and third positions respectively in the award instituted to recognise the best green islets in the state.
Islet projects have been promoted by the Haritha Keralam Mission to fight environmental challenges and to restore ecological balance.
Kozhikottukulam was selected as the best green islet from among seven islets in the local self-government category in the district level evaluations.
The award-winning Kozhikottukulam green islet is home to over 120 species of medicinal plants, including ramacham (vetiver), gooseberries, black jamun, vaatham kolli (justicia gendarussa), changalamparanda (cissus quadrangularis), fig, elanji (mimusops elanji) and urvanji (sapindus emarginatus), as well as 30 varieties of kulavetti (syzygium Travancoricum). This project was inaugurated on June 5, 2022 by minister K Radhakrishnan.
Panchayat president PP Sunitha and secretary M K Alfred made detailed presentations in front of an expert committee for the district-level award screening.
Meanwhile, the award would be presented by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at an event conducted on September 16.
