Thiruvananthapuram: One person died and two others were injured in an accident involving a pickup van in Thattathumala near Kilimanoor here on Sunday. The deceased is Nilamel native Shibin. The injured are Asif (28) and Jishu Joshy (26), both Nilamel natives. 

The incident occurred around 5.30 pm. The van was travelling to Thiruvananthapuram from Kottarakara when a KSRTC bus, overtaking another vehicle, suddenly entered its lane. In an attempt to avoid a collision, the van veered off the road and crashed into a light pole on the roadside.

The driver was trapped inside the cabin, and Fire and Rescue units from Kadakkal and Venjaramoodu rushed to the spot. They managed to break open the cabin and pull the driver out. However, he succumbed to his injuries while being taken to the hospital. 

The other two passengers were rushed to a nearby private medical college hospital. Their condition is stable and they will be discharged soon, said hospital authorities. The stretch where the incident occurred is an accident-prone spot.
