Chalakkudy: Vaibav and Krishna are relieved that they do not have to walk for over four kilometres to reach their school from Vellamchira where they live. Neither do they have to wait impatiently to hire an autorickshaw and pay the fare to attend classes at Vijayaraghavapuram Government High School. They say that they can now ride to their school without worrying about getting late or paying the auto fare. Not just Vaibav and Krishna, Athul Krishna, Alfin, Aravind and Alfonsa too got bicycles to commute to the school.
The Recycle Project, an initiative by the Central Rotary Club has gifted bicycles to 25 school students. Besides making their daily commute easier, cycling also helps the students stay fit. The rotary collected old bicycles that weren’t used anymore from various homes, repaired and restored them. The Central Rotary Club then gifted these bicycles to academically brighter students who cannot afford a cycle.
Municipal chairman Shibu Valappan inaugurated the distribution of the cycles under the Recycle Project. Meanwhile, it was presided by rotary president Aneesh George Painadath. Municipal councillor Alice Shibu, rotary assistant governor KC Anoop, Happy Chalakkudy chairman CB Arun, chairman of the Recycle Project Shobi Kanichayi, Ajeesh Parambikattil, school principal PG Sheela, head mistress S Biji, Vinod Mathachan and Rahul spoke at the event.
