Kozhikode: One elderly man died and a woman was seriously injured after being hit by a car while crossing the road in Kozhikode early Thursday morning.

The deceased has been identified as VV Gopalan (72) from Ulliyeri, and the injured woman as Sajitha from Koyilandy. The accident occurred near RP Mall on Mavoor Road around 6.30 am, when a speeding car hit the pedestrians. Both were rushed to a private hospital, where Gopalan was declared dead. “Gopalan was brought dead, and Sajitha is under treatment in the casualty ward with head injuries. Her condition is stable,” a staff member at BMH Hospital said.

The Nadakkavu police arrived at the scene and took the car driver, reportedly a doctor, and his co-passenger into custody. “The driver and his co-passenger are under our custody. Their statements have been recorded, and they were sent for medical check-up at Beach Government General Hospital. Procedures are underway to register a case,” a police officer said.
