A Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Cantonment ACP Stuart Keeler has begun a probe into the suicide of Thiruvananthapuram corporation BJP councillor K Anilkumar. Poojapura police, which initially recorded a case of unnatural death, had earlier said that the suicide note left by Anilkumar did not implicate anyone. Keeler said that the investigation will focus on the circumstances that led to his death. "We have served a notice to the society to furnish the documents. If needed, we will question the other office bearers of the society. At present, sections have not been revised," Keeler said. The police have sought financial statements, audit reports and other relevant documents from the society.

K Anilkumar, 58, who was the Secretary of Valiyasala Farm Tour Cooperative Society, was found dead in his ward office at Thirumala on Saturday. His suicide note recovered from the office showed that debts had piled up in society as people who took huge amounts as loan failed to repay the sum. This resulted in a situation where the society failed to pay the maturity amount of fixed deposits to the investors. Anilkumar's note read that there was so much money to be recouped and no legal steps were initiated to make the defaulters repay the amount. The administrative committee hadn't committed any irregularities in the society.

The CPM district leadership had demanded a probe into his death, alleging that BJP workers were responsible for driving Anilkumar to suicide. The Department of Cooperation has already initiated a probe under the relevant section of the act following a preliminary inquiry. This is being done to place the responsibility of liability on those who were entrusted with the administration of the society.  The rule says that the Registrar can order an inquiry after it has been found that some persons responsible for the management of the society has made payments contrary to the Act and the rules and has caused loss or damage in the assets or has fraudulently retained any money or property belonging to the society.

It has come to light that Anilkumar ended his life when the investigation by the office of the District Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Thiruvananthapuram was underway. "We have completed the first level of inquiry under sections 65 and 66 of the act. Once we establish a violation, we proceed to the inquiry under section 68, which is now underway. It will be completed in about three months," an official of the Cooperation Department said.

A probe report by the Assistant Registrar of Cooperative Societies showed that the society incurred a loss of ₹14.14 lakh by giving away loans in violation of the circular. The report recommended that the loss be levied against the Secretary at 18% interest. The report also mentions dues amounting to ₹4.11 crore in the Pravasi deposit scheme, which is run by the society.

The society president had to repay ₹3.3 lakh to the institution, which he had taken as an advance, according to the report. The Society's probe also found out that loans to the tune of ₹2.54 crore were given to the members of the society in violation of the society's bylaws and the provisions of the Cooperative Act. Vattiyoorkavu unit inspector has been entrusted with the probe to place responsibility of liability and violations on the office bearers of the administrative committee.
