Idukki: The district is witnessing strict enforcement of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act with regular inspections and awareness programmes, the District Labour Officer said. From January 2024 till now, officials have carried out 580 inspections at workplaces and plantations.

These checks were conducted by Assistant Labour Officers and Plantation Inspectors. Another 49 joint inspections were also held with the support of the Women and Child Development Department, Police, and Childline.

The inspections covered hotels, restaurants, bus stands, estates, factories, and other places.
Currently, there are five Assistant Labour Officers and four Plantation Inspectors working in the district.

Awareness drives
To prevent such cases, the Labour Department is organising awareness classes for workers and employers, sessions for migrant labourers in their own languages, and distributing pamphlets. The district also observes World Day Against Child Labour every year on June 12 with the help of other departments.
