Kochi: A 49-year-old man died after being trapped under a diesel tanker truck that rolled back at the Kochi metro phase 2 construction site in Kalamassery on Friday.

The accident happened around 3 pm at the contractor’s store near the casting yard. The victim, Shankar Dayal Sharma, employed with contractor Afcons, was rushed to Kalamassery Medical College Hospital but could not be saved.

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) expressed condolences, stating it “deeply regrets the tragic incident” and assured full cooperation in extending assistance to the bereaved family and supporting the official inquiry.

The KMRL Managing Director stated that Afcons has been instructed to provide an immediate explanation of the circumstances leading to the accident. The agency will also conduct an internal probe headed by its General Manager (Civil), with senior officials participating.

Following the incident, KMRL reiterated its commitment to workplace safety. The Director (Project) will oversee inspections across all sites to review safety measures and enforce stricter protocols to prevent such mishaps.
