Alappuzha: The menace of giant African snails has intensified across Alappuzha city, causing distress to residents and farmers alike. Locals report that the snail population has exploded with the onset of rains, leaving salt as the only quick remedy to control them. The pests thrive along the coast, in waterlogged areas, and where organic waste accumulates. Poor drainage and garbage build-up have worsened the problem, affecting all 52 wards of the city.

African snails are commonly seen on house walls near drains, on tree logs along canal banks, and even on uncleared roadsides. They feed on lime and cement to strengthen their shells, clinging stubbornly to walls. They also hide under wet clothes, sacks, mats, and coconut fronds, emerging in large numbers by dusk.
The snails pose a serious threat to crops, attacking vegetables such as plantains, papaya, and spinach. With leaves and plants being eaten away, cultivation has become nearly impossible in affected areas. Alarmed residents are urging the municipality to take immediate action to control the infestation.
