Perumbavoor: The seed production centre at Okkal under the district panchayat will now be powered by solar panels, taking a step closer to sustainability. The solar panels of 25 kilo watt were installed by the panchayat by spending around ₹15 lakh.
Lots of pump sets need to be powered for extensive watering purposes in the farm that sprawls in 33 acres. District panchayat president Manoj Moothedan said that the district panchayat had decided to implement the solar project as the centre pays hefty sums as electricity bills when the pump sets are switched on for long hours during the summer.
The solar panels were built by ANERT, a government owned agency. Meanwhile, the construction of many new projects including a cafeteria, an open auditorium and a huge goat shed as part of the farm tourism project initiated by the district panchayat at the Okkal seed centre which is one of the best farms in the district, is progressing here. The construction of a toilet complex and a gateway too will begin soon. Benny Behanan MP will inaugurate the solar project at the seed centre at 9.30 am on September 29.
