Tribal children in Wayanad struggle after mother killed, father injured in wild tusker attack

Vaduvanchal: Sumitra, Anjusha, Reshma and Shakti, the children of Mini who was killed by a wild tusker is struggling to make the ends meet at their dilapidated shed in Parappanpara tribal hamlet. Mini and her husband Suresh were attacked by a wild tusker on March 27, 2024. While Mini lost her life, Suresh who was severely injured is still undergoing treatment.
The children stay with Suresh’s relatives at Kadassery in Vaduvanchal. They sleep on the muddy floor under the leaky roof. The food and the care provided by the relatives is their only comfort. Meanwhile, Suresh’s sister Madhavi and her daughter care for the children aged between two and half and ten, along with their own kids.
Suresh who sustained a leg injury is undergoing treatment at the Kozhikode Medical College. He doesn’t even have a bystander to help him at the hospital as he doesn’t have any money. Mini and Suresh who belong to the Cholanayka tribal community were attacked by the wild elephant. Mini died on the spot while Suresh sustained severe injuries. The family who was staying at Parappanpara then moved to Kadassery. The couple’s youngest daughter was just one and half years old when the incident happened. Meanwhile, Madhavi says that the children have not been receiving any aid from the authorities.
Four other kids of Suresh are studying at the Rajiv Gandhi Ashramam School in Noolpuzha. They too come to their aunt’s house during the holidays. The forest department had announced Rs 10 lakh as compensation for Mini’s family, but hey have received only Rs 5 lakh. Although the department has reportedly issued the remaining amount, the family hasn’t received it yet.
