Kerala sees rise in crimes against women, cyber offences, murder cases

New Delhi: Kerala witnessed a steady rise in crimes against women, as per the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) for 2023. While 13,539 such cases were registered in the state in 2021, the number increased to 16,025 in 2023.
In 2023, a total of 4,48,211 cases were filed across the country in connection with crimes against women. The numbers were 4,28,278 in 2021 and 4,45,256 in 2022. Of the total cases, 29.8 per cent were related to crimes committed by the husband and his relatives. Kerala had 4,832 cases in this category.
Cybercrime
NCRB’s figures also showed that cybercrime cases saw a 31.2 per cent nationwide increase in 2023, compared to the previous year. While 86,420 such cases were registered in 2023, the figure for 2022 was 65,983.
In Kerala, 773 cybercrime cases were registered in 2022, which significantly rose to 3,295 cases in 2023.
Murder cases
Interestingly, while the number of murder cases fell nationwide in 2023, it increased in Kerala. According to NCRB, 334 murder cases were registered in the state in 2022 and 352 in 2023.
Personal enmity was cited as the reason for 158 of the murders that took place in Kerala in 2023. Eight murders were attributed to love affairs and six to extramarital affairs.
