Kozhikode: The organs of K Ajitha (46), a native of Chalappuram, Kozhikode, who was declared brain dead following a cardiac arrest, have saved the lives of six people.
Ajitha was admitted to Baby Memorial Hospital, Kozhikode, on September 28, 2025, after suffering a cardiac arrest. She was declared brain dead on October 2, after which her relatives consented to organ donation. The procedures were coordinated by the Kerala Network for Organ Sharing (KNOS/K-SOTTO).
Her heart, liver, two kidneys, and two corneas were donated. The heart was transplanted into a 44-year-old woman at Metromed Hospital, Kozhikode. A kidney went to a 19-year-old patient at the Government Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, where both corneas were also donated to the eye bank. The other kidney and the liver were transplanted at the Baby Memorial Hospital.
Speaking to Onmanorama, Ajitha’s son, Sharath, said that organ donation was the family’s way of keeping her memory alive. “We voluntarily came forward for donation. This way, we can still see her live through others. Her life has become meaningful now, and she would have been very happy,” he said.
Health minister Veena George praised the family’s decision, calling it an act of courage in the midst of deep sorrow, and offered her condolences.
Ajitha is survived by her husband P Ravindran, children P Sarangi and P Sharath, and son-in-law Midhun.
