Palakkad: The Health Department has suspended two doctors of Palakkad District Hospital after finding lapses in the treatment of a 9-year-old girl that led to the amputation of her hand. Junior Resident Dr Mustafa and Junior Consultant Dr Sarfaraz were suspended pending further inquiry and disciplinary action under Rule 10(1)(a) of the 1960 KCS (CCA). The suspension comes despite district hospital authorities ruling out negligence, a stand they reiterated to the media on Sunday.

The child's father, Vinod, told Onmanorama that they had raised concerns about lapses by the doctors, but the authorities did not take action. The child, admitted with fractures on September 24, was initially treated with reduction and plastering, but later developed complications.

Despite follow-ups, she returned in critical condition on September 30, when doctors found a blood clot and referred her to Kozhikode Medical College, where amputation was deemed necessary. While the hospital maintains all due care was given and called the complication rare, the family has alleged negligence, following which Kerala Health Minister Veena George had ordered a probe.
