Kakkattil: Concerns are mounting as the chlorination programme, launched by local bodies to prevent amoebic encephalitis, appears to have stalled. The disease prevention initiative ,  aimed at disinfecting wells and waterbodies with stagnant water, has reportedly lost momentum.

The Health Department had earlier issued warnings that the amoeba causing the disease could thrive in stagnant water during summer months. Residents were also cautioned against venturing into stagnant water in stone quarries and similar locations.

Now, complaints have emerged that authorities have failed to chlorinate the water in the stone quarry pond adjacent to a playground at Kulangarath in Ward 10 of the panchayat.

The Ward Congress Committee has demanded urgent action to expand chlorination to all wells and ensure public safety. The meeting, presided over by Chenikandi Anwar Sadath, was attended by PC Sajeer, K Hameed Puthiyedath, KK Raveendran, Ramla C Kakkattil, VP Raghavan Nambiar, PM Ashraf, and Murali Kulangarath, all of whom voiced concerns over the delay.
