Anakkara: Biju, a native of Kuruvikkattupara in Kottayam District, did only what many farmers in the locality do as part of a customary farming activity - sticking cow dung on rocks to dry them. But his recent act earned him a fine of ₹10000, imposed by Chakkupallam Panchayat.

However, the penalty on the dairy farmer for drying cow dung in a deserted rocky area has sparked controversy. Chellarkovil Olikkara Biju, has received various awards from the State Government and District Panchayat for being the best dairy farmer.

The cow dung, filled in sacks, was kept for drying in a deserted area at Kuruvikkattupara, a border region between Chakkupallam and Vandanmedu Panchayats. For years, dairy farmers in the area have been using these rocks to dry cow dung. Recently, a person passing by took a photo of this and shared it on social media. Subsequently, the Panchayat took action against the farmer.

Chakkupallam Panchayat's explanation is that the action was based on a complaint. However, Vandanmedu Panchayat, which received the same complaint, only issued a notice to the farmers to remove the cow dung.
